It’s 9 am on Sunday morning and I receive a text message from a female friend of mine that simply read ‘WHAT HAVE I DONE?!'
I am setting up for an early morning market. I’ve been up since 6am, the day is well on its way to 35 degrees and the market is in a tin shed. I have make up melting off my face already and to top it off- period pain. So yeah, I get it.
I’ve known this amazing lady since we were 5 years old. We went to kindergarten together and have remained friends for the last 25 years. My beautiful friend had recently followed me into the entrepreneur world. She started Yellow Palomino, a coaching and HR consulting business. She is married, had a 18 month old daughter at home and only weeks earlier had started a business.
I sit down to respond to this message and I remember this moment. I had so many of these in the past year. I remember the WTF moments. The ‘Oh what have I done’ moments. I remember it well. I respond and reassure her that she is alright and I promise to Skype. I prescribe coffee, vodka, chocolate and sleep as required. She wishes me luck at the markets. Later in the day she will message and hope I’ve had a good day. (Even when she was having a crappy day, she wanted to build me up. This is a true friend lovely readers!)
Today is International Women’s Day and the reason I’m telling you the above story is because being a lady in the business world and is really really hard. We live in a culture where the laundry, the groceries, the cooking, the housekeeping, taking care of your significant other and children/fur babies mostly fall on us and we have to juggle a business in that mix as well. Add into this mix as well that women in the business world actually get a bit of crappy deal. I’ve had people hold one of my hand cut silver jewellery pieces and state how clever my husband is to be able to make these. I’ve been dismissed as the secretary when someone had called to wholesale order jewellery. I’ve been asked frequently ‘How do you juggle it all?’ with accusing eyes that kind of hinted ‘you’re messing it all up, aren’t you?’ And all of this is before we even start judging ourselves and the fact that we forgot to pick milk up on the way home.
On this International Women’s Day, I wanted to remind my lovely ladies that we all have our bad days.. We will all wonder what the hell we have done. We have all been there and we have all dropped the ball at some point but we need to give ourselves a break. We also need to be able to lean on our business networks and acknowledge how difficult this all can be.
But also this is a timely reminder that you are not alone. I am happy to receive the bad day text messages and offer advice when I can. I promise to build my business ladies up. We have a hard enough time- I promise to always have your backs when you need it.
So here is to all the great women out there. May we be them, may we know them, may we raise them.
And don’t forget- coffee, vodka and make sure you sleep as required.
